How Reading English Texts Can Help You Be Better at Communicating in English

Does Reading Matter for Learning English?

Does it really matter whether you read English text regularly or not? It matters. The more you read diverse English materials, the more habituated/comfortable you will be in using English in a diverse manner.

When you read such a material, possibilities are that you will come across the usage of different types of sentences, tenses, narrative approaches, new words etc. Initially you will struggle to grasp these if you are encountering any of them for the first time, after several such encounters you will have grasped these if you spend some time learning new usage at the first instance.

What is English text?

English text is any piece of writing in English. Examples include:

(1) newspaper, magazine, blog articles

(2) books including textbooks

How to Read English Texts to Maximize Learning New Usage

(1) When you read something written in English, try to understand how the sentence is structured to convey the desired meaning. If the sentence structure is unfamiliar, seek help from English learning/usage books/websites. Then try to imagine any other example situations where you can use the similar sentence structure. This imagining exercise will help you retain the knowledge of the newly learnt sentence structure in your memory longer time.

(2) If you come across an unfamiliar word, spend some time to scroll the dictionary and find the intended meaning of the word. Now figure out the meaning of the whole sentence after inserting the meaning of the new word. Imagine any other context where you can use this word. This exercise will help you retain this word meaning for a long time.

Happy reading and learning.
